WSESD Board Meeting Norms

  • Use sensitivity when discussing school matters.
    • Avoid referring to individual staff members or students unless necessary.
  • Engage in respectful and non-judgemental listening.
    • Contribute to an environment where all can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings .
  • Assume positive intentions.
    • We are all here for the WSESD community & students.
  • Be accountable for impact.
    • Even when we have very positive intentions, we  can still cause harm. When we respond to negative impact, we commit to:
      • Step 1: Acknowledge the harm that has been caused, regardless of  the intent of individual’s actions
      • Step 2: Seek a path forward that is informed by restorative practices
  • Board discussions should include all voices equally.
    • Share your perspective on an issue when appropriate. Be mindful of leaving space for other voices. Do not dominate the discussion. Do not talk over or interrupt other speakers. Avoid cross-talk; wait to be recognized by the chair before speaking.
  • Be mindful of each other’s time.
    • Start meetings on time. Keep comments on the topic and avoid lengthy monologues. Recognize the goal of ending meetings by 9:00.
  • Shared responsibility
    • All board members will be included in developing meeting agendas collaboratively.

This is a living document – the board can adjust these norms as needed.
