BEGINNING TO DECONSTRUCT WHITENESS

The “Beginning to Deconstruct Whiteness Study Group” meets monthly and provides readings to help people analyze whiteness as a historical phenomenon. People examine how their whiteness has impacted their own lives and people of color. Through selected videos, readings, and discussion, this group questions the roots of “racial” prejudice, which have become deeply embedded in our country’s basic structure. We started our study with the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. However, this includes our financial, housing, policing, judicial, employment, education, and voting systems. How are we a part of keeping these systems going? How can we begin to address the injustices so prevalent today? Please contact msimms@wsesdvt.org to join.

RACE AND THE INTERSECTION OF CULTURE, POLITICS, AND SCIENCE

This project aims to support students in learning about themselves within a social, cultural, and scientific context. Our goal is for staff and students to understand and clearly communicate the significance and implications of scientific understanding and social-cultural constructs related to race.
